Onboarding quickstart

This quickstart takes you through onboarding from start to finish for an Iterable project: connecting your customer data, connecting Iterable, and preparing your first journey. Each step says what to do, what you should see, and which page has the full instructions. At the end, JustAI has your customer data, your Iterable project is connected, and your first journey uses a verified sending profile.

If you send through Klaviyo or Customer.io, follow Choose a delivery provider instead of Connect Iterable. The data steps below are the same.

  • You’re a member of your JustAI organization, and you have your organization slug. Your JustAI team gives it to you at kickoff.
  • You’ve made the decisions in Plan your onboarding, especially your customer ID and your data source.
  • You’re the Iterable admin for an Iterable project in Iterable’s US data center, with permission to manage API keys, data feeds, system webhooks, campaigns, and templates, or your Iterable admin is working with you.
  • Your Iterable project identifies users by email: it’s an email-based or hybrid project. JustAI doesn’t support userID-based projects. See Recipient identity.
  • The From email you plan to use is on at least one email campaign template in your Iterable project. JustAI offers the senders it finds on those templates.
  • You have a test inbox that you can open in a browser where you’re signed in to JustAI. If your organization requires marketing consent, the test address needs a granted email consent decision. See Consent decisions in Identify.
  • An organization admin in JustAI can save your company’s mailing address.

Owners: Engineering Data your engineering or data team.

  1. Get API access and a JustAI API key.

Ask your JustAI team to turn on API access for your organization. Open the account menu at the bottom of the left sidebar and check that the environment under your name is the one you send data to. Then select Settings > API keys, and select New key. Copy the key from the API key created dialog. It starts with jai_, and JustAI shows it only once. A new key may not work immediately. Confirm it succeeds before switching traffic to it. See Credentials.

  2. Choose your customer ID and fields.

Use a stable userId for every person, and send each person’s email address in the email trait. JustAI finds each recipient in Iterable by that address, so it must match the address Iterable has for them. List the other traits your first journey needs. See Identity and consent.

  3. Connect a data source and test it with one person.

Set up your source, then send one profile and one event for the same test userId. Search Users for that user ID to see the profile. The event name appears in Events > Custom events after processing. Then turn on the full source, and spot-check a few people in Users against your source. See Choose a data source and Test your connection.

Owner: Marketing your Iterable admin.

These steps don’t depend on Connect your data, so your Iterable admin can do them at the same time. Work in the same environment that your data goes to.

  1. Add your Iterable project.

Open Settings > Integrations and select Add > Iterable. Enter an Account name, and paste a server-side Iterable API key with full read and write access. Select Verify, then Save API key. The API key row reads “Key saved”. See Add your Iterable project.

  2. Set up the content data feed.

Create a data feed named JustAI content feed in Iterable, with the URL that JustAI shows and a feed token from Generate token. Then enter the feed’s ID in JustAI and select Save data feed. The Content data feed row reads Data feed #<id>. See Set up the content data feed.

  3. Set up the system webhook.

Create a system webhook in Iterable with the endpoint that JustAI shows. Set it to Enabled, leave Authentication at None, and turn on the send and engagement events for each channel you use. Then select Verify and Set header in JustAI. The System webhook row reads Webhook #<id>, and Iterable starts to report sends and engagement to JustAI. See Set up the system webhook.

  4. Add your company mailing address.

An organization admin opens Settings > Delivery and saves the Mailing address. It appears in the footer of every email, and JustAI sends no email through Iterable, including test emails, until it’s set. Settings > Delivery also shows sender settings for email that JustAI sends without Iterable. They don’t affect your Iterable sending. Leave them as they are, and create Iterable sending profiles on your Iterable connection, as in the next step. See Create a sending profile.

  5. Create a sending profile.

On the Iterable connection in Settings > Integrations, in the Sending profiles row, select Add profile > Email. Enter a Name and choose the From email. Check the Sender name, Reply-to email (optional), and Message type (optional) that JustAI fills in, because you can’t change any profile field after you create the profile. Then select Create profile. JustAI creates a triggered campaign and a template named JustAI · <profile name> in your Iterable project. See Create a sending profile.

  6. Turn on Ignore Frequency Cap.

On the new profile, under Verify setup, open the campaign in Iterable. Turn on Ignore Frequency Cap and save the campaign without activating it. Then select I’ve turned it on in JustAI, and JustAI activates the campaign. Iterable locks this setting on an active campaign, so do these in order. See Turn on Ignore Frequency Cap.

  7. Send and confirm a test email.

Enter your test address and select Send test email. Open the email in a browser where you’re signed in to JustAI and select Click here to confirm. JustAI shows “Profile confirmed!”, and the profile badge changes from Setup needed to Verified. See Send a test email.

Owners: Marketing JustAI team your marketing team, with your JustAI team.

Start these steps after your data is connected and your sending profile shows Verified. Your JustAI team walks your marketing team through building and proofing the first journey.

  1. Create your first journey and choose the profile.

In Journeys, select Add journey and create the journey. JustAI creates it as a draft. Select Settings in the journey’s header. Under Delivery, choose your Iterable connection and the verified profile for Email. See Use the profile in a journey.

  2. Run the launch checklist.

Work through the launch checklist with your JustAI team. It covers your data, your Iterable connection, your first journey, and who watches the journey after launch.

Open your Iterable connection in Settings > Integrations and check each row:

  • API key reads “Key saved”.
  • Content data feed reads Data feed #<id>.
  • System webhook reads Webhook #<id>, and doesn’t say “needs the JustAI secret key” or “is disabled in Iterable”.
  • Sending profiles lists your profile with the status Verified.

Onboarding is complete when all of these are true:

  • Your sending profile shows Verified.
  • Your first journey uses that profile for Email.
  • Every item on the launch checklist is checked.
