Add your Iterable project

Add a connection for your Iterable project and save an Iterable API key on it. JustAI uses the key to create templates and campaigns, set up the system webhook, and trigger sends in that project. When you finish, the connection’s API key step reads “Key saved”, and the Content data feed and System webhook steps unlock.

  • Your Iterable project is in Iterable’s US data center.
  • You can create API keys in that Iterable project.
  • The account menu in JustAI shows the environment that will send. The connection belongs to that environment.
  • No other JustAI connection uses this Iterable project. See Connect more than one Iterable project.
  1. In JustAI, open the account menu at the bottom of the left sidebar and select Settings.

    Settings opens on Integrations.

  2. Select Add, then Iterable.

A new connection opens with the title New Iterable integration.

  3. In Account name, enter a name that identifies the Iterable project, for example Iterable production.

Each connection needs a unique name. JustAI saves the name when you save the API key.

  1. Under Connection and reporting, select the API key step to expand it.

  2. Select the API keys in Iterable link.

    Iterable’s API keys page opens.

  3. In Iterable, create a new API key. Choose the server-side key type with full read and write access.

Read-only keys and client-side keys for mobile apps or JavaScript don’t work with JustAI.

  4. Copy the new key.

JustAI uses the key to:

  • create and update the email, SMS, and push templates for your sending profiles
  • create triggered campaigns and activate them
  • trigger sends to email, SMS, and push
  • find and update the system webhook that reports back to JustAI
  • list your project’s campaigns, senders, and message types, so you can choose them in JustAI
  • read the email Iterable rendered, to show message previews

This key is an Iterable credential. It is separate from the JustAI API key your engineering team uses to send customer profiles and events. See Credentials.

Verify the key before you save it. On a new connection, Save API key does not check the key with Iterable.

  1. Back in JustAI, paste the key into API key.

The step summary changes to “Key entered”.

  2. Select Verify.

JustAI shows “Key verified. Save to keep it.” If it shows “Verification failed:” followed by an error from Iterable, see If verification fails.

  3. Select Save API key.

JustAI confirms with your account name, for example “Iterable production saved.” The step summary changes to “Key saved”.

  • The API key step shows a check mark and reads “Key saved”.
  • The Content data feed step reads “Register the feed in Iterable and save its id.”
  • The System webhook step loads your project’s system webhooks. In a project with no JustAI webhook yet, it reads “Webhook not set up yet.”
  • In Settings > Integrations, the connection shows Need Setup. It changes to Configured after you finish the content data feed and the system webhook.

“Verification failed” means Iterable did not accept the key. Check these causes in order.

Cause Fix
The key is incomplete. Copy the whole key from Iterable again and paste it.
The key is a client-side key for mobile apps or JavaScript. Create a server-side key with full access.
The project is in Iterable’s EU data center. JustAI works only with US data center projects. Talk to your JustAI team.

A key without write access fails at a later step, when you select Set header on the system webhook or create a sending profile. If that happens, replace it with a server-side key that has full access.

Replace the key when your security policy requires it, or when someone who had the key leaves your team. Use a key from the same Iterable project.

  1. In Iterable, create a new server-side API key with full access in the same project.

  2. In JustAI, open the connection in Settings > Integrations and expand the API key step.

The step reads “To replace this key, create a new one in Iterable and paste it below.”

  3. Paste the new key into API key.

  4. Select Verify.

JustAI shows “Key verified. Save to keep it.”

  5. Select Save API key.

The step summary reads “Key saved”.

  6. After confirming sends succeed with the replacement, revoke the old key in Iterable.

After the connection has sending profiles, JustAI checks that the new key can read their templates before it saves the key. If the check fails, JustAI doesn’t save the key and shows one of these messages:

Message Cause and fix
“This API key belongs to a different Iterable project than this connection’s sending profiles.” The key comes from another project. Create the key in the project this connection already uses.
“Iterable rejected this API key. Check the key and try again.” Iterable did not accept the key. Copy it again, or create a new server-side key.
“Iterable API key verification is temporarily unavailable. Try saving again.” JustAI couldn’t complete the check. Select Save API key again.

To move your sending to a different Iterable project, add a new connection for that project instead of changing the key.
