Create a sending profile

A sending profile is a sender that journeys use to send through Iterable: a From email, sender name, reply-to address, and message type. When you create one, JustAI creates a triggered campaign and a template for it in your Iterable project. You then verify the profile with a test message. Journeys can send through the profile after it shows Verified.

This page covers email sending profiles first. SMS and push profiles follow the same pattern with one extra step. See Create an SMS or push profile.

  • The connection’s API key, content data feed, and system webhook are done. Until they are, the Sending profiles step reads “Complete the steps above to continue.”
  • You can edit campaigns and templates in the Iterable project.
  • You have a browser where you are signed in to JustAI.
  • Your Iterable project identifies users by email. See Recipient identity.

For an email sending profile, you also need these:

  • An organization admin has added your company’s mailing address in Settings > Delivery. Iterable email from JustAI shows this address in the footer, next to Iterable’s unsubscribe link. JustAI refuses test emails and sends until it is set.
  • The From email you want to use is on at least one email campaign template in Iterable. JustAI offers the senders from those templates.
  • You have an inbox you control for the test email. If your organization requires email consent, that address needs a granted email consent decision in JustAI before you send the test. See Consent decisions in Identify.

JustAI identifies each recipient to Iterable by email address, on every channel. The address comes from the email trait on the person’s JustAI customer profile.

  • Iterable finds its user by that email address. Texts and pushes go to the phone number or devices that Iterable has for that user.
  • A person with no email on their JustAI customer profile can’t receive messages through Iterable, including SMS and push.
  • Use an email-based or hybrid Iterable project. JustAI does not support userID-based Iterable projects. If your project is userID-based, talk to your JustAI team before you continue.

For how to send the email trait and match people in Iterable, see Identity and consent.

  1. In Settings > Integrations, open the Iterable connection. In the Sending profiles step, select Add profile, then Email.

The New Iterable sending profile form opens with a Setup needed badge.

  2. Under Profile details, enter a Name, for example Welcome series.

  3. Under 2. Sending information, choose the From email.

JustAI fills in Sender name, Reply-to email (optional), and Message type (optional) from that sender. Check each value and change it if needed. You can’t change these values after you create the profile, and a blank Sender name sends as JustAI.

  4. Select Create profile.

JustAI creates the campaign and template in Iterable and opens the profile page, which shows Verify setup.

Field What to enter
Name Required, up to 120 characters. Use a name that is unique on the connection. JustAI treats names that differ only in letter case or punctuation, such as Welcome series and welcome-series, as the same name.
From email Choose a sender from the list. JustAI lists the senders on your project’s recent email campaign templates. If the project has no email campaigns yet, type the address. To use an address that is not listed, add it to an email campaign template in Iterable first. The list can take a few minutes to refresh.
Sender name The name recipients see. If you leave it blank, JustAI uses JustAI.
Reply-to email (optional) The address that receives replies. If you leave it blank, Iterable uses the From email.
Message type (optional) One of the project’s email message types. Iterable applies its subscription preferences for this message type, so choose the one that matches the subscription category of these messages.

You can’t change any profile field after you create the profile. To change the name, sender, sender name, reply-to address, or message type, create a new sending profile. A connection can have up to 50 sending profiles.

The profile page shows only Name and From email. To check the sender name, reply-to address, and message type later, open the Template link under Iterable details on the profile page.

For each email sending profile, JustAI creates two things in your Iterable project, both named JustAI · <profile name>:

  • An email template. Its subject, preheader, and body come from the content data feed. JustAI content feed is attached, and data feed caching is off.
  • A triggered campaign. It sends with the template. JustAI leaves the campaign inactive until you finish the Ignore cap step.

Iterable gives each campaign its own copy of the template, so Iterable can show two JustAI · <profile name> templates for one profile. Leave both in place. On the profile page, the Iterable details section links to the Campaign and the Template.

Don’t edit JustAI’s campaigns or templates in Iterable, including the template copy inside each campaign. JustAI doesn’t check these settings after it creates them, so an edit in Iterable can change or stop your sends without a warning in JustAI. Tell everyone who works in your Iterable project to leave the JustAI · campaigns and templates alone.

Setting to keep Why
JustAI content feed attached Iterable fetches each message’s subject, preheader, and body through it. Without it, messages go out blank.
Data feed caching off Each send must fetch the content prepared for that person. With caching on, Iterable can reuse one person’s message for other people.
The subject and body that read from the content data feed In an email template, the subject reads [[{ justai.subject }]], the preheader reads [[{ justai.preheader }]], and the HTML body contains [[{ justai.body }]]. In an SMS or push template, the message reads [[{ justai.body }]]. These fields hold the content JustAI prepares. If you replace them, Iterable sends your edited text instead.
An unsubscribe link Iterable manages unsubscribes for the email it sends. Keep Iterable’s unsubscribe link in every email.
The sender and message type from the profile If they change, sends go out from the wrong sender or under a different subscription category.

The only campaign setting you change is Ignore Frequency Cap. Don’t add rate limits or other delivery restrictions to JustAI’s campaigns.

Verify setup has three steps: Ignore cap, Send test, and Check inbox. A profile shows Setup needed until you finish all three.

  1. On the profile page, under Verify setup, select the link the campaign in Iterable.

The profile’s campaign opens in Iterable.

  2. In Iterable, under Delivery settings, turn on Ignore Frequency Cap.

If there is no toggle, the campaign’s message type is not capped, and there is nothing to turn on.

  3. Save the campaign in Iterable. Don’t activate it.

  4. Back in JustAI, select I’ve turned it on.

JustAI activates the campaign and moves to Send test.

If the campaign became active before you turned on Ignore Frequency Cap, Iterable no longer lets you change the setting. Create a new sending profile with a different name and complete Ignore cap in order. Then remove the old profile and archive its JustAI · <profile name> campaign and template in Iterable.

  1. Under Send a test email, enter an address you control.

  2. Select Send test email.

JustAI shows “Sent to” followed by your address, and “Waiting for your click”. The test can take a few minutes to arrive.

If nothing arrives, select Resend next to Nothing yet?. You can resend an email test right away.

  1. Open the email with the subject “Confirm your JustAI sending profile”.

  2. Select Click here to confirm. Open the link in a browser where you are signed in to JustAI.

    JustAI shows “Profile confirmed!”.

  3. Go back to the profile page.

The badge changes to Verified, and Verify setup reads “Verified · test email confirmed”.

Only the confirmation click verifies the profile. A test that Iterable accepted still needs the click.

Message What to do
“Waiting for Iterable to accept the test.” Wait a few minutes. The status updates when Iterable accepts the test.
“We couldn’t confirm whether Iterable accepted the test. …” Check your inbox and the campaign’s activity in Iterable. If the email arrives, select Click here to confirm. JustAI does not send it again automatically.
“Turn on Ignore Frequency Cap on this profile’s campaign in Iterable and activate it before sending a test.” Finish Turn on Ignore Frequency Cap.
“Add your company’s mailing address in Settings > Delivery before sending email. …” Ask an organization admin to save the mailing address in Settings > Delivery, then send the test again.
“Finish the Iterable connection’s API key and content data feed before testing this profile.” Finish the connection steps. See Connect Iterable.
“This address is suppressed. Choose another test recipient.” Send the test to another address you control.
“This workspace requires email consent, and the test address has none. …” Ask your engineering team to send an Identify call that includes the test address in traits.email and a granted email consent decision. See Consent decisions in Identify. Then select Resend. To turn off the consent requirement while you test, talk to your JustAI team.
“Iterable reported a bounce for this address.” Send the test to another address you control.
“The send failed. Check the profile’s campaign in Iterable and the connection’s API key.” Check that the campaign is active and unchanged in Iterable, and that the connection’s API key is valid. Then select Resend.
“This test never reached Iterable. Send a new one.” Select Resend to send a new test.
“This link isn’t valid. Send a new test email from this profile.” Send a new test email from the profile page and use the link in the newest email.
“This profile could not be confirmed. Open the link again.” Open the link in the email again.
Status Where it appears Meaning
Setup needed The profile page and the connection’s list of sending profiles The profile exists, but you have not confirmed a test yet. Journeys can’t send through it.
Verified The email sending profile’s page and the connection’s list of sending profiles The test is confirmed. Journeys can send through the profile.
Active The SMS or push profile page The test code is confirmed. The connection’s list shows Verified for the profile.

In a journey’s Journey settings, an unverified profile can’t be selected and shows Needs setup ↗. JustAI refuses sends and proofs through an unverified profile.

SMS and push profiles use the same connection. Iterable picks the SMS sender or the push integration from the profile’s message type. Iterable also manages each recipient’s phone number and devices, and handles STOP replies to texts.

  1. In the Sending profiles step, select Add profile, then SMS or Push.

The New Iterable SMS profile or New Iterable push profile form opens.

  2. Enter a Name and choose a Message type.

The list shows the project’s SMS or push message types. If it reads “No SMS message types in this project” or “No push message types in this project”, create a message type for that channel in Iterable first.

  3. Select Create profile.

JustAI creates a template and a triggered campaign named JustAI · <profile name> and opens Attach data feed & verify.

Attach data feed & verify has four steps: Ignore cap, Attach feed, Send test, and Confirm code.

  1. Complete Ignore cap the same way as for email, then select I’ve turned it on.

JustAI activates the campaign and moves to Attach feed.

  2. In Attach feed, select the link the template in Iterable.

The campaign’s own copy of the template opens. This is the copy Iterable sends.

  3. In Iterable, select Edit details.

  4. Under Data feeds, add JustAI content feed and leave data feed caching off.

  5. Save the template in Iterable.

  6. Back in JustAI, select I’ve saved the template.

  7. In Send test, enter the email address of an Iterable user who has a registered phone number for SMS, or a registered device for push.

The field starts with the email you sign in with.

  8. Select Send test text or Send test push.

  9. In Confirm code, type the 6-digit code from the message and select Confirm.

The badge changes to Active, and the card reads “Verified · JustAI content feed attached”.

Code rules:

  • A code works for one hour, and only the code from the latest test counts.
  • You have five tries. A wrong code shows “That code doesn’t match.” with the number of tries left. After five wrong codes, send a new test.
  • Send tests at least a minute apart.

To check an SMS or push message, send a test from its profile. Journey proofs for SMS and push don’t go through Iterable.

  1. Open the journey and select Settings in its header.

    The Journey settings panel opens.

  2. Under Delivery, open the list that reads “Choose an integration” and choose your Iterable connection.

A connection appears in this list after it has at least one sending profile.

  3. Choose the verified profile for Email. If the journey sends texts or pushes, also choose profiles for SMS and Push.

Delivery changes save to the journey’s draft and go live when you publish.

  1. On the profile page, select Remove sending profile, the trash icon next to the status badge.

  2. In Remove this sending profile?, select Remove profile.

JustAI removes a profile only when no journey uses it in a draft, a published version, or an unfinished run. Otherwise, JustAI lists the journeys that use it. Choose another profile in those journeys, update their published versions, and finish or stop any remaining runs. Then remove the profile.

Removing a profile leaves its campaign and template in Iterable. Archive them in Iterable if you no longer need them.

  • The connection’s list of sending profiles shows the profile with Verified.
  • In Iterable, the JustAI · <profile name> campaign is active, and Ignore Frequency Cap is on.
  • In a journey’s Journey settings, under Delivery, you can choose the profile.
